It is amazing how many FREE apps there are for our smartphones and tablets.

Are people really that generous  that they don’t need you to pay them for all their hard work?

I’ll give you a little hint: “No“.

Here’s my Tip for the week – Free apps are NOT entirely free.  But, YES you can get your own benefits from the app for free.

The app developer does need to make money. Here are a few of the most common ways they benefit:

  1. Advertising – they display ads when you use the app.
  2. Upgrade – They hope to get you hooked and want to upgrade to get additional features.
  3. Subscription – Downloading the app is free, but to actually use the service, or receive the benefits you need to pay.
  4. Inducement/Convenience/Access – Enables you to use the services of a company, e.g. a Bank or Hospital etc.

But, there is still a benefit for you too! And it can be free in some cases.

  1. You don’t care about the advertisements. You can still enjoy the game or service.
  2. You might be happy with just the features that are provided with the free version and don’t need to upgrade.
  3. You might already have the service or subscription and now just get the added convenience of being able to access it on your smartphone or tablet.
  4. You were thinking about joining or trying to decide which company to go to with, and you like the convenience of there app access.

In any case, people are always asking me why there are so many free apps.  I hope this helps a little.
